. Short term growth, boom in production and involvement of intermediaries in second half of twentieth century had brought in a feeling of complacency in the marketing of agri-produce across the World. It is only now that agriculture is being transformed; even its marketing policies, institutions and arrangements are now also being reviewed for better management.

. Both organic food production Philosophy and Standards promote direct relationship between the producers and consumers. To achieve this kind of status for many other conventionally produced food products, many experiments are being attempted. In almost all these experiments, it has been realized that without the utilization of Information Technology (IT) the chain between the producers and consumers can not be shortened. Thus in most of these initiatives, Computers have been used very extensively.

. For quite some time, IT applications were developed to provide only one way communication. In most of these initiatives Computers have been used for collection of information, record/s keeping, and analysis of data and for report/s generation. Mass media communication channels have also been utilized to disseminate information.

. In many initiatives, Internet-Web based interface for information collection, processing and dissemination has been developed. However, Internet-Web itself has limited outreach and accessibility is beyond the large majority of stakeholders.

. To provide seamless, hassle free and low cost communication between the producers and consumers, an integrated IT-ICT platform is required to be developed. This can happen only with the cooperation and assistance from IT Service Providers. This platform will require multi-channel access arrangements. The IT tools would be required to integrate all modes of communication to form an integrated IT-ICT platform.

. Use of Information Technology will deliver comprehensive knowledge management platform that on one hand will provide unprecedented outreach for small and distributed producers in remote rural areas, on other hand it will provide innovative solutions for an efficient organic market place.
